Recognized once a year, Inti Raymi is a very large festival that the Incas once celebrated between the final harvest and the beginning of winter in the Andes. This time period, in the second half of the month of June, was recognized by celebrating the begininng of a new year and the end of the last agricultural year. In past years, the celebration has been brought back to life every June 24 in the city of Cusco also known as the capital of the Tawantinsuyo Empire. The tour is almost a full day, and we start by pick-up from respective hotels at 8:20 am with transfer to the following sites:
Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), 09:00am, the Inca makes his entrance in the superior part of the temple to greet the sunrise exactly at the point that the sun produces its first rays exactly above the famous Qoricancha wall. Later the Inca is lead in ceremonial procession to the Plaza de Armas by Amaru Kancha Street.
Plaza de Armas, 11:00am The Inca and his entourage enter for Inti Kijllu Street to Cusco's main plaza, the place where you two cultures meet: the historical and the modern. Here the Inca makes his special speech to the mayor of Cusco city.
Saqsaywaman 13.30pm, The beginning of the ceremony starts in the esplanade of Saqsaywaman's archaeological complex with the beginning reports of the four regions of the ancient Tawantinsuyo that included those known as: Qollasuyu, Kuntisuyu, Antisuyu and Chinchaysuyu. Later, there is the chicha ceremony, sacred fire ceremony, llama sacrifice, Sankhu ceremony (a type of bread), and finally the Qochurikuy wrap-up ceremony.
